2007 | The year of the Boar

"As the Year of the Dog closed, Japan remains dogged by a host of foreign-policy challenges carried over from the previous year. Among those challenges are: resolving the crisis over neighboring North Korea's nuclear program, a grave security concern for Japan; contributing to peace and reconstruction in Iraq; and getting soured relations with China and South Korea, a negative legacy of Abe's predecessor, Koizumi, back on track.

Meanwhile, the Japanese economy is booming, renewing the record postwar growth spell. Many analysts optimistically expect the boom to continue, at least throughout the new year. The Bank of Japan (BOJ) ended its unusual zero-interest policy of nearly six years last July, raising rates to 0.25% from effectively zero, as the economy gained strength. The focus of immediate attention is when the central bank will make the next rate hike, which may come early in the new year. (...)

There is a Japanese term chototsumoshin, meaning "dashing forward recklessly," that uses the kanji characters for a boar charging ahead. Without a crystal ball, it is impossible to predict precisely how the myriad political, diplomatic and economic challenges facing the Abe government will play out in the new year. But at least one thing seems clear: the prime minister will not be able to dash forward to achieve everything on his long-term agenda, especially a constitutional revision, if he fails to ride out what is seen by some as a life-or-death election for him in summer."

#2 Trends

Over the past 12 months it was noted that…
• It became harder to gripe about how pricey Tokyo is as the city officially lost the title of most expensive to Moscow.
• Men’s beauty treatments went from strength to strength. Girdles for men were hot sellers.
• Japanese grannies got global economists worrying about what might happen to the world economy if they bring home the $2.5 trillion of savings they have invested overseas now that interest rates are higher.
• The new economy went out of fashion as the two top players of the “money game,” Takafumi Horie of Livedoor and Yoshiaki Murakami of the so-called Murakami Fund, were locked up.
• Speed dating parties were seen as a way to halt the falling birthrate, and were even subsidized by the government.
• Companies embraced the gray consumer. Lawson opened a convenience store for the elderly (brown décor, easy-to-read price tags, blood pressure monitors); Louis Vuitton started planning a range of products for pensioners

• Tuna stocks can be saved by injecting maguro sperm into mackerel.
• Couples who live in countries where women are considered equal enjoy better sex. (The most satisfied are the Austrians; the least satisfied are the Japanese.)
• People born in spring are 17 percent more likely to commit suicide than those born in autumn.
• Rats that eat Japanese food live longer than rats that eat hamburgers.
• Guide dogs live longer than regular dogs, even though they work harder.

These Things Matter

"A while back, when dick and Barry and I agreed that what really matters is what you like, not what you are like, Barry proposed the idea of a questionnaire for prospective partners, a two- or three-page multiple-choice document that covered all the music/film/TV/book bases.

It was intended a) to dispense with awkward conversation, and b) to prevent a chap from leaping into bed with someone who might, at a later date, turn out to have every Julio Iglesias record ever made.

It amused us at the time, although Barry, being Barry, went one stage further: he compiled the questionnaire and presented it to some poor woman he was interested in and she hit him with it.

But there was an important and essential truth in the idea, and the truth was that these things matter, and it's no good pretending that any relationship has a future if your record collections disagree violently, or if your favorite films wouldn't even speak to each other if they met at a party.

ano novo

Ultimamente relembrei-me porque continuo tão insistentemente a querer crer nela...
